The winners of the third annualRoyal Society Publishing photography competitionhave just been released , showcasing the most beautiful and scientifically - charm image from the cosmos around us .
The top prize was snapped up by Peter Convey , a polar ecologist with the British Antarctic Survey , for his photo taken in 1995 of the frigid sugar cube formation of Antarctica as a plane vaporize overhead ( image below ) . “ It ’s been an unbelievable privilege to work in the Antarctic for nearly 30 years now , every time I go there it takes my breathing time away , ” winner Peter Convey said in a statement . “ As a terrestrial ecologist , primitively specialise in insects , you would n’t think the inland field of the continent could bear much scientific promise , but you would be so wrong ! ”
