The winners of the third annualRoyal Society Publishing photography competitionhave just been released , showcasing the most beautiful and scientifically - charm image from the cosmos around us .
The top prize was snapped up by Peter Convey , a polar ecologist with the British Antarctic Survey , for his photo taken in 1995 of the frigid sugar cube formation of Antarctica as a plane vaporize overhead ( image below ) . The photo also acquire the top prize in the Earth Science and Climatology category .
“ It ’s been an unbelievable privilege to work in the Antarctic for nearly 30 years now , every time I go there it takes my breathing time away , ” winner Peter Convey said in a statement . “ As a terrestrial ecologist , primitively specialise in insects , you would n’t think the inland field of the continent could bear much scientific promise , but you would be so wrong ! ”
He lend : “ Even today , very few biologists have had chance to visit such inland area across the continent , yet the biology we find there has drive fascinating new insights into the biogeography and antiquity of the few terrestrial groups that live – in short , they have been there tens of million of days or more , survive throughout multiple gelid cycles where we antecedently thought all biography would have been wiped out . Such findings are driving entirely novel cross - disciplinary interactions between biology , glaciology , and geology in essay to advantageously understand the organic evolution of Antarctica . "
The contest receive over 1,100 entry from across the existence – the high amount of entries yet for one of their competitions .
