SpaceX successfully launched one of its reusable Eruca vesicaria sativa again yesterday , but there was quite an unusual landing place try when the skyrocket splashed down in the Atlantic   – and survive .

The company was launching a large orbiter for the Luxembourg politics , calledGovSat-1or SES-16 , into a Geostationary Transfer Orbit . The rocket lift off from Cape Canaveral ’s Space Launch Complex 40 in Florida at 4.25pm Eastern Standard Time ( 9.25pm GMT ) yesterday , January 31 .

This was the 2nd time the first point booster on this skyrocket had flown to orb , the first coming back in May 2017 when it was used for SpaceX’sfirst US military launching . Back then , the admirer   – called Core 1032   – successfully set ashore at Landing Zone 1 at Cape Canaveral .

But on this occasion , SpaceX wanted to try out a raw landing place proficiency . Although we do n’t have intercourse all the contingent , it looks like they were trying to usethree of the rocket ’s nine enginesto Din Land , rather than just one . This could allow for a higher powered landing place and thus a myopic suntan so that less fuel is expended during the landing place .

SpaceX conducts landing both on the ground and on floating drone ship out at sea for higher launches like this one . With this landing , however , SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said they did n’t want to attempt touch down on a droning ship , for reverence of damaging it with this data-based proficiency .

Rather surprisingly , however , the rocket seems to have survived its unusual sea landing place . Musk tell they would now attempt to recover the booster , although it ’s unclear if it will be used for another launching ( brine damage might make that a bit dodgy , as the Space Shuttleencountered ) .

“ This projectile was meant to essay very gamy retro - thrust landing in body of water so it did n’t hurt the trailer ship , but amazingly it has survived , ” Musk tweeted . “ We will judge to tow it back to shore . ”

This is n’t the first time SpaceX has execute an sea landing . In the early days of their reusability trial , theyused this methodto practice their landing place techniques . Now it looks like they ’ve refined them even more with this latest psychometric test .

The launch yesterday   was SpaceX ’s second successful launching of the year , after hire the secretiveZuma payloadto scope on January 7   – although the position of Zuma is not clear .

Its next launch is a little Eruca sativa you may have get a line of called theFalcon Heavy . It ’s scheduled to launch on Tuesday , February 6 , and yes , there ’s plenty of fervour for that one . The three champion on that launch are expect to land back on Earth , two at Cape Canaveral and one on a swim drone ship .
