SpaceX made history yesterday when it set in motion and land one of its orbital rockets that had flown before for the first metre .

The groundbreaking ceremony launching took place at 6.27pm EDT ( 11.27pm BST ) from Cape Canaveral in Florida . On board was the SES-10 telecoms satellite for Luxembourg company SES .

All the excitement was revolve around on the first stage of the rocket , though , which had alreadyflown to spaceonce in April 2016 on a cargo mission to the International Space Station ( ISS ) . SpaceX has now recuperate eight   of its rockets – but this is the first one to fly double .

“ It means you could pilot and refly an orbital form booster , which is the most expensive part of the rocket , ” CEO Elon Musk say in a webcast shortly after the landing place . “ This is going to be , ultimately , a Brobdingnagian revolution in spaceflight . ”

The first phase , model pretty on the drone ship after shore last night

The landing occurred about eight   bit after liftoff , with the first stage using grid fins to stabilise itself and finally firing its booster to shoot down on the drone shipOf Course I Still have sex You . The video provender momently sheer out , but when it jumped back to show the rocket had bring down , there was a rapturous celebration at SpaceX ’s headquarters .

This was the ninth   successful landing place for SpaceX – three   on land and   six at ocean – but arguably the most important since thefirst onein December 2015 . Being able to fly the first stage of a rocket again and again proves rockets can be recyclable . This could dramatically reduce the price of going to space , which has been SpaceX ’s goal all along .

In a press conference after the landing Musk said the first leg represented about 70 percent of the price of each flight , but fuel price only about 0.3 per centum . With each launching expect to add up in at around $ 60 million , reprocess the first stage obviously has a vast cost benefit .

And it ’s not just the first stage they want to recycle . On this flight of steps , SpaceX surprised us all by also performing a control landing place of the payload fair – the clamshell metal shape on top of the Eruca sativa that protects the planet on the way to blank – at sea , using thrusters and parachutes . This itself costs about $ 6 million .

Here ’s a replay of the launch

In the future , the ultimate destination is for thesecond stageof the rocket to be reclaimable , too . Thus , there would be almost no expendable parts . Only Blue Origin ’s New Shepard vehicle ( and NASA ’s Space Shuttle to an extent ) have shown this sort of reusability capacity . SpaceX has changed the plot , and other more established company arestruggling to keep up .

It also ramp up the trajectory charge per unit . Musk said he was trust to plunge , earth , and launch again in 24 hours as ahead of time as next yr , which is hugely ambitious , considering it took months to refurbish this first degree . If that happens , SpaceX will be able to plough through its growing catalogue of launching contracts at a charge per unit one by other launching provider .

He also said they were planning to launch their new clayey - elevation rocket , the Falcon Heavy , for the first sentence in late summer this year . Falcon Heavy will use three boosters compare to Falcon 9 ’s one – but on this first flight of stairs , Musk said the two side booster would be ones that had flown before .

And there ’s plenty more excitement to come this year . Five more reflown rockets may launch , while theirmanned Dragon capsulewill undergo a test escape towards the end of 2017 , with a first manned flight plan in 2018 . In a calendar month , Musk said we ’d also get new detail and an updated timeline for his Interplanetary Transport System , a bold plan to gethumans to Mars .

Some have bemoan that architectural plan as being too ambitious . But SpaceX has done a jolly good occupation of show its critics wrong so far . Who have sex how far they can really go .

“ There should be absolutely zero question that SpaceX will prevail in reaching reach and demonstrating dependable distance transport , ” Musk say to his employeesback in 2008 , after his initiatory Falcon 1 rocket fail on its fashion to space . “ For my part , I will never give up , and I mean never . ”

Few can doubt him now .
