On Monday, fraternal twinsJenna Bush HagerandBarbara Bush, 41, appeared onThe Kelly Clarkson Showand got candid about their ever-changing bodies.
The conversation started with the women discussing theAmerican Idolwinner’s first Halloween in New York as a mother sinceher daytime television show made the movefrom Universal City Studios in Los Angeles to 30 Rockefeller Plaza.

As they talked aboutpast costumes, throwback photos appeared on the large display screen behind them — one in particular caused the conversation to switch gears.
Clarkson, 41, showed a photo of the twins as children, wearing matching blue dresses.
Still, Bush said “there was a stage” when her sibling was a bit overweight. Clarkson confessed that she’s “had many stages” of being heavier than she would have preferred.
“I love losing weight, but here’s the thing,” Clarkson said as the audience applauded. “Jeans are so hard when you have a butt and a smaller waist.”
The vocalist — who hasshed poundsover the years — has been transparent about her weight loss journey throughout her career.

“Even onAmerican IdolI was really thin, but I was bigger than the other girls on the show, so people would say things to me,”she told PEOPLE in November 2017. “But luckily I am super confident, so I’ve never had a problem with shutting people down and saying, ‘Yeah, you know, that’s just what I’m rocking. It’s fine.’ ”
She’d previously admitted that she was bulimic as a teen because at the time she thought being smaller would help her get better roles in her school musicals.
During a December 2020 visit toThe Ellen DeGeneres Show, Clarkson reflected on how she would still getscrutinized about her weightafter her first child was born.

She also explained that her weight can sometimes mirror a “yo-yo.”
“So sometimes I’m more fit and I get into kickboxing hardcore. And then sometimes I don’t, and I’m like … I’d rather have wine.”
