Last summertime , Alexander “ Sasha ” Banderov and Simeon Ivanov were sailing on a stream flowing into Siberia ’s Semyulyakh River when they saw something unmatched . The hunter were passing a ravine and noticed hair hang down from the top right cant . They thought it might belong to the cadaver of a reindeer , but they could n’t be certain — whatever it was , it was too far away for them to get a proficient look . When they returned to the spot in September , however , the ice had melt , and the chunk comprise the carcass had fall onto the riverbank , allowing the hunters to get tight enough to calculate out what the carcass was . “ We pick up a horn on its upper jaw and realized it must be a rhinoceros , ” Banderov secernate theSiberian Times . The carcase is only the second woolly rhinoceros specimen ever chance , and the first ever calf .
Though the expose part of the carcass had been gnawed on by animals , the relaxation of the carcass was in pristine condition . Banderov and Ivanov demand the carcass home and place it in a glacier to keep it inhuman ( who require a freezer when you live in Siberia ? ) , then called scientist in the Mammoth Fauna Department at theAcademy of Sciences of the Republic of Sakha , Yakutia , 1800 miles off . This week , the museum keep back a closet league announcing the unbelievable uncovering .

Woolly rhino roamed Europe and Northern Asia during the Pleistocene Epoch before they went extinct 10,000 years ago , but specimens , even incomplete ones , are incredibly uncommon . “ We get laid nothing about child rhino . Even to find a skull of a baby rhino is very favorable indeed , ” Albert Protopopov , head of the Mammoth Fauna Department , enjoin . “ So far we did n’t have a chance to make for even with a tooth of a babe rhino , and now we have the whole skull , the head , soft tissues , and well carry on teeth . … We are hoping Sasha the rhino will give us a lot of response to questions of how they grew and develop , what conditions they lived in , and which of the mod day animals is the close to them . ”
scientist plan to attempt to extract DNA from the preserved stiff . They believe the rhinoceros — which they ’ve appoint Sasha — died from fall into a pit , and was around 18 months former at the time of its end .
