Astronomy is full of such examples . Tarter recounts the iconic discovery of pulsars that part in 1965 - 66 , when a team of graduate student built a new type of radio telescope :
Jocelyn Bell and her fellow worker spent the summer nailing up kilometre of wire and fence posts to make a humbled - frequency detector . They made it for a very scientific goal , but yet when Jocelyn was looking at the data , she found these little bits nucha . She was odd enough and taxonomical enough to adopt up on them .
Suddenly , wow ! There are radio beacon light out there more precise than any clock we ’ve built . There are intact ace , neutron wizard , that are spin around several times a second . Unbelievable ! They see it because they had a new tool . They had a different fashion of bet at the world .
This materialise again and again and again . Every time we invent a new tool , discoveries conform to . “ I recall being creative , build up fresh way to wait at the universe , can leave to awful results . ” Tarter said . “ You do n’t do that if you call up , ‘ Well , I ’m extend to do today what I did yesterday . ’ ”
