NBC ’s ambitious Emerald City , premier tonight ,   is now and again stunning , sometimes emotionally interesting , and often an dauntless reimagining of not just The Wizard of Oz , but all of L. Frank Baum ’s Oz leger . But mostly it ’s as empty as the Scarecrow ’s brain .

Emerald City has taken years to reach out our screens . It was first mean to air in 2015 , it was call off due to “ creative deviation ” between the original showrunner and the studio . In 2015 , NBC resurrected the show with new executive producer David Schulner and Shaun Cassidy . The 10 episode delivered to NBC were all direct by Tarsem Singh ( The Fall ) , and sport an older Dorothy ( Adria Arjona ) , a police dog Toto , Glinda ( Joely Richardson ) as a variety of high priestess , and the Wicked Witch ( Ana Ularu ) as the owner of a bawdyhouse . Welcome to the latest attempt to “ modernize ” The Wizard of Oz .

Emerald City does taste to avert using CG for its locations , mercifully avoiding trapping its actors in rooms full of greenscreen . That said , it intend that Emerald City itself is n’t a unique intent , but Park Güell in Barcelona , with no disguise at all . It ’s jarring to see the great unwashed treat Antoni Gaudí ’s instantly identifiable designs as part of Oz . It in a flash takes you out of the news report , not that there was much keeping you there . Oz is also curiously washed out , only making enjoyment of coloring material as a contrast to the gray , brown , and white of everything else . That means that Emerald City is n’t emerald - colourise . In fact , none of the colors L. Frank Baum assigned to various parts of his world are withdraw advantage of at all , keep open some depressed facepaint on the Munchkins .

Emerald City is n’t secure . It ’s frustrative . It ’s clearly stress to make some full stop , but , try as you might , you wo n’t find anything other than the obvious : extremism is forged , magic and science are n’t inverse , love is hard , and there ’s also a trans * character who struggles with being what ’s expected . The last one is the one plow the respectable , and the most interesting since it ’s mostly an examination of something L. Frank Baum put in his original story but did n’t examine the psychology of at all .

But all those things are so apparently executed that they do n’t justify the over - the - top production they have been give . Nor do they vindicate the over - the - top secret plan that shit almost no horse sense when you render to figure it out . It seems mostly like everyone in Oz really , really liked Game of Thrones and decided it was a playbook for how to run for a world . It ’s so baroque that you accept there has to be something more , but there is n’t . Tarsem Singh uses loaded imagery all the time , but none of it seems to have in mind anything . For case , the Scarecrow character , played by Oliver Jackson - Cohen , is found on a cross . Is he sacrifice ? Is he a martyr ? No . It ’s just a nerveless image that you will tear your pilus out trying to figure out . And that defeat live on the whole show . All the arresting tableau fondly put together by the director experience like they should have some encroachment , but they do n’t .

Another plot point that I tore my whisker out over was the Wizard ( Vincent D’Onofrio , who play him as less competent , less physically violent Wilson Fisk ) . Add him to the list of men who feel jilt that the world , and the woman they were obsessed with , did n’t fall to their feet just because he felt he was owed it . I honestly can not narrate if we ’re reckon to find his backstory good-hearted or if it was theorise to make us hate him more . I hated him a lot , but the predictable agency everything else in the show was handled made me think that it was meant to make me palpate bad for him . But peradventure it was a subversion . Or maybe I just wanted someone , somewhere , to finally raise the idea that being obsessive is n’t okay .

The only part of Emerald City that is interesting is that the Lord apparently know their Oz . This is n’t just another Wizard of Oz remake — they’ve take all the Baum Good Book ( or at least the Wikipedia summary of them ) and they ’ve pluck them aside and piece them all together . Figuring out how they ’ve done that will keep Oz fans paying attention for a little while , but it ca n’t convey a show .

There are too many characters , most given too piddling clip for the audience to link to them , include , weirdly enough , Dorothy . Her desire to be something “ more ” is the only hint we get that she ’s not well-chosen in Kansas . And she never exhibit enough fond regard to her life there to vindicate her intense , never - waver - unless - the - game - dictate - it trust to go home .

Emerald City is so concerned with looking a sure elbow room and with the ingeniousness of its own use of Baum ’s books , that it forgot to make anything else body of work . There ’s so much going on that it ’s well-heeled to assume there ’s something more go on underneath the open . But there is n’t . It ’s all hollow .
