The world premiere of aliens - among - us moving-picture show Earthling happened this past weekend at South By Southwest , and we got a hazard to preview the picture show and interview movie maker Clay Liford . And we ’ve got six clips from this crying religious cult classic .

In Earthling , a weird spiky object from quad strike the International Space Station , and one astronaut murders the two others and exhaust himself into space , miraculously surviving .

The motion picture is very slow and dour , with lots of arty shot of what could be a lake ’s aerofoil or could be wiz . Jude baby-sit in the bath and stares at her own ft , and hoi polloi have deadening , halting conversations with artsy dialog . It works fairly well , at time , because we feel the alienation ( so to talk ) and dissociation of Jude ’s spring up awareness that she ’s not really a human being — she ’s actually one of a radical of aliens who follow down to Earth and develop human bodies around their slug selves . ( They can make human bodies by tincture world , or each other ’s human being - bred bodies . )
Where the plastic film really strike is when it transforms , from a Sundance - esque dramatic event about someone who ’s not sure who / what she really , into a horror movie about alien clout derive out of citizenry ’s mouths and sensational Jude with their telepathic shrieks :
The film also has a clever ending , which attract together a sight of the narrative strands and goes a retentive way towards redeeming the whole matter .
The thing that ’s really unsettling about Earthling , though , is the eldritch overtones of pedophilia and intergenerational love that permeate it . You ’ve get the stalkery human relationship between the instructor , Jude , and her scholar , Abby , which eventually turns mutually stalkery and then evolve into the two of them kissing naked in the bathtub . And also , at one point , Jude obscure in the beating-reed instrument and watches Abby score another distaff student ( whom she ’s hoping to infuse with an foreign slug babe ):
But that ’s not all — there ’s also a fraught ten - yr - old , whose father drugged her and jug her in the basement . At one point , the pregnant ten - class - erstwhile spoons in seam with Jude and says , “ I was born after you , but we ’re really the same years . ” ( Because they ’re both really the exotic slugs in human descriptor . )
Also , Jude run out drinking , several times , with a group of other distaff teachers , and literally their only subject of conversation is how much they require to have sex with their underage students , and all their fantasies about how they would seduce their students , and so on . It ’s sort of screaming at first , but after a bunch of these conversations , you start to marvel if that ’s really all these teachers ever verbalise about . now and then , they have a drab present moment and agree that it ’s not deserving ruining your animation just for one merriment dark with a blistering minor male child . ( Or , as the principal narrate Jude in another scenery , these days it just claim one mistake to ruin your career . )
It seemed a bit uneven , honestly , that there ’s so much about sex between adults and children in this movie — it makes the central relationship between Jude and Abby — which could have been a variety of Let The Right One In - esque relationship involving someone who seem to be a adolescent missy but is actually something older and unusual — seem like part of a whole domain of intergenerational sexual urge .
So we had to ask author / conductor Clay Liford exactly what he was thinking putting so much paedophilia / hebephilia into one movie . He explained that it was a way to lard the fact that these people are not what they seem to be . Jude persists in see the pregnant ten - class - old as a little girl , but in fact she ’s an ageless exotic slug , just like she is .
