For a moment there on last nighttime ’s Agents of SHIELD , I think I was going to have to throw my TV set out the window and possibly determine ardor to some stuff .
Spoilers ahead …
Luckily , everything become out all right . But this was very intimately a “ burn everything down ” place .

The giving fakeout in “ Purpose in the political machine , ” as memorialize in the gif above , is that you think that Fitz has descend within a haircloth ’s breadth of rescuing Simmons from the evil foreign satellite where she ’s been trapped since the goal of season two . The team is pull Fitz back , not realise he ’s actually got a thin grip on Simmons , and you see him torn away from her . But phew — it ’s hunky-dory . They develop Simmons back , after all , after the exotic monolith thingy explodes into a million chunks .
But at what cost ? Is Simmons really hold out to be okay , after being trapped on an exotic satellite for month and months ? ( However much time go past on that other satellite . ) The last we see of her in this installment , she ’s wake from a nightmare , to find Fitz sitting by her bed . And then she curls up with her fountainhead in Fitz ’s lap , which is incredibly sweet . But I ’d be astonished if we do n’t see some farsighted - terminal figure fallout from her getting strand .
And even though Fitz pull off an unbelievable miracle , he did it by taking a huge , crazy chance , on top of all the longshot chance that he and the repose of the team consider to get him there . ( Something that Andrew , the squad ’s resident shrink , keeps pointing out . )

And there ’s a sort of theme turn tail through the installment : That you’re able to do great thing if you push yourself to your limit . But that doing this , over and over again , can call on you into a colossus . This paper gets explore through a bunch of different characters . Let ’s run through them one by one :
Leo Fitz . As we go through last week , he goes half - crazy in his insistence that Simmons is alive , and his determination to get her back by any means . This time around , he in reality come back with real grounds — some exotic sand that came through the portal — and gets everybody on board the “ saving Simmons ” bandwagon at last . But he still goes kind of overboard once they chance the magic castle in Britain where there ’s a secret basement that contains a steampunk machine that hold in the monolith , then Fitz completely loses it and jumpstart into the portal vein instead of sending the camera probe they want to broadcast . He ’s lucky that he manages to pull Simmons out , alternatively of getting trap there himself .
Phil Coulson . As Andrew keep saying , Coulson is kind of crowd it and seems somewhat do-or-die for a triumph — any victory — to excuse everything he ’s doing . ( He did save that Joey cat last week . That ’s something , right ? ) As Professor Randolph , the Asgardian that Coulson helps bout out of prison house , enunciate , Coulson seems unlike . He ’s no longer quite as easy - passing as he seemed back in time of year one , and it ’s not just because he turn a loss a deal . As Coulson says , “ thing cause messy . ” He ’s also willing to send Lance Hunter out on a mission to assassinate Grant Ward . Not capture , kill . He ’s very great on that particular kill order . ( And Lance is utterly happy to carry out that order of magnitude , after what Grant did to Lance ’s once and future wife , Bobbi . )

Daisy Johnson . She seems fairly despairing to enrol that Joey bozo to her fresh “ Secret warrior ” team ( the words are actually address this week ! ) , even though Joey is fresh and freaked out and he ca n’t touch a doorknob without disappear it . Daisy work Andrew pretty heavily to get Joey cleared for action , but Andrew is used to pushful spies . Daisy is convert that she require to do better than her mommy at providing a position for the Inhumans where they can be safe — but also useful . Her mom provided a kind of “ halfway house ” for the superpowered quasi - mutants , but Daisy thinks they ’ll be happier if they can actually make a difference , by working for a covert non - governmental agency that ’s been criminalise for its yesteryear association with evil terrorists . As Andrew point out , she risks turning her Inhuman friend into monsters if she pushes them to use their powers too promptly and recklessly , without training and judgment — and her human friends , also , danger becoming something terrible if they move recklessly .

And then , of course , Daisy pushes her mightiness to the bound , keeping the portal open so Fitz can rescue Simmons , and nearly choke in the process .

Melinda May . She sort of obscure out with her elderly Church Father in Sun City , AZ — which is a sort of town - sized retirement community — and serve him play golf . Her dad dispenses raft of soundness that boils down to the approximation that Melinda is like her undercover agent mother and she ca n’t just take the air aside from her life with SHIELD . And then Lance Hunter demonstrate up , wanting to recruit Melinda for Operation Kill Grant Ward , and bring in the mind that Grant could have been responsible for for the hit - and - extend accident that injured Melinda ’s don . Melinda seems like she ’s personifying the end - state of what happens if you allow yourself to become a behemoth in the chase of duty , and she ’s dreadfully glow out . But then she change her mind and joins Team Lance … because killing Grant is always a fun sentence .
And finally … Ward . In an installment that ’s all about the danger of becoming a monster as a result of taking extreme action mechanism , Ward is someone who ’s embraced his inner monster . Ward makes a huge manifestation of how the raw Hydra will be a leaner , meaner political machine , by place a former Hydra bigwig on top of his expensive play car and driving around a garage with a clustering of his new recruit suffer motionless next to support pillars :
And then Ward goes to a flock of fuss to tag down Werner von Strucker , the Logos of former Hydra head Wolfgang von Strucker , to enrol him for the new Hydra . But he does n’t desire to offer Werner a role in Hydra until he prove that he ’s willing to be a total psychotic freak , like Ward . So he stages a whole complicated operation , with rat on a boat , to fascinate Werner and pretend to extort him for info on his bank accounts . When Werner last turns the tabular array and stupefy up one of his captors , Grant decides he ’s test he has what it takes to be a Hydra goon .

So the other radical in this sequence is ascendence , as consider in the above clip where Grant exults in the superb handling of that Italian sports elevator car . And Fitz figures out how to use the ancient steampunk auto to curb the monolith ( until Daisy can use her powers to do the same matter ) . And Melinda May , of trend , want to be in control of everything , all the time , even though she claim she left ice - skating for martial arts because she want to fall on a cushiony floor instead of voiceless ice .
And in the episode ’s kicker , the guy who has drop the whole 60 minutes giving out salvia counselor-at-law about not getting devour by your demon — Andrew , May ’s X — gets a trade name new educatee . Werner von Strucker is going to be take Andrew ’s psych course of instruction . marvel which one of them will have more to teach the other ?
