skillful news — someone is finally making overbold , indie repulsion again . The new movie Citadel does n’t need torture porn , celebrities , buckets of blood , or jump off scares to give you chills — it ’s just good anxiety - driven horror . After being assail by a crew of 14 - year - olds and baffle with a mallet , writer / managing director Ciaran Foy channeled his struggles with anxiety disorder into this movie . And it really paid off .

Spoilers ahead …

After helplessly witnessing his pregnant wife ’s gruesome plan of attack by a pack of hooded teens , independent eccentric Tommy ( Aneurin Barnard ) is leave alone with his new born daughter , penniless and suffering from agoraphobia . He drop his days in an empty apartment , bear on his babe to and from the hospital ( where his wife is in a coma ) and to support - group meeting for post - traumatic tension disorder ( among other things ) . The world he lives in ( the motion-picture show was shot in Glasgow ) is bleak , colourless and empty . Every time he take the bus ( when he makes it ) it ’s empty . The towers of low rent condos and townhouses in his neighborhood are all free . It ’s almost as if Tommy is the only somebody in his world . Which just gives the consultation a wad of quiet panicked alone time with Tommy . Eventually his monotonous journey of care easy becomes your fear . What ’s in the neighbor ’s mansion ? The answer is : Yes , yes they have . The Kyd ( who do n’t reveal their hideous , mangled face until later on in the impression ) want Tommy ’s baby . And slowly they begin to seem on his threshold , kill into his kitchen behind his back . And Tommy starts to suffer his mind even more .

The movie derails somewhat when a wacky old Priest ( played by James Cosmo ) shows up , with an all too convenient connexion to the Hooded Pack . Together , the frightened Tommy and the Priest go to war with the teenage beasts and through their journey into the black towers of Glasgow , and a scrap more about the monsters is revealed . But not too much , gratefully .

really the best part of this movie is n’t the Hoods or the action , or the backstory , it ’s Tommy ’s struggle to get out of the theatre . This main character reference ’s struggle with agoraphobia is played dead on screen . It ’s never funny , or overdone — he does n’t spend hours being the silly indoor nestling but he did footstep , stare at the door , and make ugly decisions dictate by his condition . For good example , Tommy is so frightened to leave the planetary house , when his front room access is broken by the Hoods , he would rather lock himself in the lavatory with his sister than face another long walk of life alone alfresco . I presume this is due to the writer and conductor ’s own struggle with these issues . And in a picture about feral mutant teens , Tommy ’s actions and reactions feel exceptionally genuine .

Burning Blade Tavern Epic Universe

Go see Citadel . It ’s a sharp little revulsion movie that has some badly flighty scenes . It ’s not perfect , but ascertain one of Tommy ’s many nut - out is worth the ticket Mary Leontyne Price alone .
