cleaning lady in Blade Runner 2049 are constantly objectified by the world around them , flex into automate helpers , puppets , and sex toy . The postal service - dystopia build by director Denis Villeneuve is roughshod and dehumanizing to everyone , but specially to fair sex .

This raise some important questions about the way sexism and gendered subjugation are depicted in motion picture , questions that critic and fans have been contend since the pic came out . Are the film ’s limning appropriate ? When and how does a film cross the line from depicting naturalistic sexism to simply enacting it ? Are the woman in Blade Runner 2049 complex and realistic enough to sell the film as critique ?

lately , Villeneuve himself weighed in on some of these questions in an interview with Vanity Fair .

“ I am very sore to how I portray women in moving picture , ” he say . “ This is my ninth feature cinema and six of them have adult female in the lead persona . The first Blade Runner was quite approximative on the cleaning lady ; something about the film noir aesthetic . But I strain to bring deepness to all the characters . For Joi , the holographical character , you see how she evolves . It ’s interesting , I intend . ”

He took the chance to climb poetic , and consider his broader approach to women in film . “ What is cinema ? ” he inquire . “ Cinema is a mirror on smart set . Blade Runner is not about tomorrow ; it ’s about today . And I ’m sorry , but the cosmos is not kind to cleaning woman .

“ There ’s a gumption in American cinema : you want to portray an idealistic cosmos . You desire to portray a utopia , ” he allege . “ That ’s near — pipe dream for a better humanity , to advocate for something well , yes . But if you front at my moving picture , they are explore today ’s vestige . The first Blade Runner is the biggest dystopian statement of the last half C . I did the pursue - up to that , so yes , it ’s a dystopian vision of today . Which magnifies all the faults . That ’s what I ’ll say about it . ”

I ’m sympathetic to Villeneuve ’s answer , and I agree with a lot of what he ’s say . But some of it is also a pig - out . The original Blade Runner was n’t just hard on woman ; it was downright nasty . Deckard ’s attitude toward Rachel is violent and vulturous in their love scene . It definitely cut across the line from depiction into something that feels more like victimization .

I ’m still torn on where Blade Runner 2049 lies on that spectrum . But it ’s safe to see Villeneuve talking about it , at least .
