Researchers at MIT have find feature around Chiron — a Centaurus in orbit between Saturn and Uranus — that bespeak a ring organization , or possibly jet or a cuticle of detritus . If confirmed , it would only be the 2d minor planet in our Solar System known to host closed chain .
Chiron , more officially known as 2060 Chiron , represents a relatively fresh year of objects phone Centaur . These minor planet , which are in orbit between the asteroid belted ammunition and the Kuiper knock , have features indicative of both asteroids and comets . Astronomers estimate that there may be as many as 44,000 centaurs in the Solar System , mostly concentrated in a circle between Jupiter and Pluto . Chiron , with its diam of 144 miles ( 233 kilometre ) , may actually restrict it as a midget planet .
Last year , another minor planet , Charliko , was found to have a pair of dense and narrow ring . Now , it appears that Chiron might have rings , too . Jennifer Chu from MIT Newsreports :

In November 2011 , the group observed a astral eclipse in which Chiron passed in front of a lustrous star , briefly blocking its light . The researchers analyzed the star ’s light emanation , and the momentary shadow created by Chiron , and identified optical features that paint a picture the Centaurus may own a circulating phonograph recording of debris . The squad believe the feature may signify a gang system , a circular shell of gas and dust , or symmetric jets of stuff shooting out from the Centaurus ’s aerofoil .
“ It ’s interesting , because Chiron is a Centaurus — part of that center incision of the solar arrangement , between Jupiter and Pluto , where we originally were n’t thinking thing would be active , but it ’s turning out things are quite alive , ” says Amanda Bosh , a lector in MIT ’s Department of Earth , Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences .
The researchers observe a duo of features , each about 186 air mile ( 300 km ) from Chiron ’s center . They appear to be 1.8 and 4.3 mi ( 3 and 7 km ) astray , respectively . The go possibility is that these lineament are rings , though the scientists have n’t rule out a shield or hoop of accelerator pedal and dust , or symmetrical jets of gas pedal and dust .

As for the origin of these features , it ’s possible that Chiron captured the debris from another physical object that broke up . The band could also be leftover material from the formation of the Centaurus itself .
“ Another possibleness necessitate the chronicle of Chiron ’s distance from the sunshine , ” noted study co - writer Jessica Ruprecht in MIT News . “ Centaur may have set off further out in the solar organization and , through gravitative interactions with gargantuan planets , have had their orbits perturbed closer in to the sun . The frozen cloth that would have been stable out past Pluto is becoming less stable closer in , and can turn into gases that spray dust and cloth off the surface of a torso . ”
Regardless , it now appears that centaurs are n’t always the dead , dormant objects they ’re often attributed to be .
