What was it like making your own costume back in the day , before DVDs and screencaps and elaborated instruction ? One buff strove to make his own C-3PO costume soon after Star Wars came out , and face major challenge .
Over at the RPF forum , “ WarPig ” write :
The airplane propeller / costume maker at that time had minimal resources for reference : “ buff publications ” ( Famous Monsters case periodicals ) , official movie program ( yes ! you could purchase token programs at the pic ! ) and if you were lucky , a major magazine such as Life would do a graphic account . If you were * really * lucky , one of the fan periodicals would do a peculiar magazine release . It so hap that Star Wars obtain a dedicated magazine . IIRC , it was 64 Page of coarse-grained photos ( some even in color ! ) and short articles . It had perhaps a XII pictures of 3PO , of which perhaps four had enough “ detail ” to be useful .

Another side note : for the benefit of the members who were not gestate yet in ’ 77 ( about 80 % ) , the 15 % that were between the eld of two and five , and the 3 % that were n’t into SW until subsequently in life : there was no such thing as sharing digital info . clay sculpture , casting , machining and fiberglassing were attainable only by the rich , and vcr ’s had yet to make their way into home . pic were * not * release for sales agreement a few month after release ; a moving picture stayed in theatres until ticket sales belong down , then it slowly faded away in the 2nd and third - run field . Once the picture show went away , that was it .
His whole saga of trying to produce an exact 3PO costume in 1977 is worth read . [ The RPFvia Adam Savage on Twitter ]
