We often hear of hoi polloi mistaking the mundane for the unusual . It ’s a footling rare to learn it fall out the other way around . And even rarer to listen about it happening in modern times . And yet , a full - on search and rescue performance had to be called off when an SOS signal turned out to be a shooting star .

Last Sunday , people live off the Cumbrian coast in England reported view a “ moving red object ” in the sky . Some reports seeing a ship ’s flare to the coastguard , inspire a sea rescue operation . When they did n’t regain any sign of the ship , there were concerns they were too late .

They were n’t . The move reddish object was by and by found to be the same meteor that had been seen andphotographed over Loch Ness , Scotland . explain a spokesperson for the coastguard :
We received many report from other parts of the country reporting lights in the sky .
But after investigating , it was decided that the sighting was the meteor .

Well , better secure than sorry . well a meteor be mistaken for a flare , than a flare pass be disregard as a meteor .
