Concrete . It ’s perchance the sober material on the planet , but that unto itself make for a powerful artistic all its own . For this week’sShooting Challenge , you shot concrete anatomical structure . The effect ? Cold . Rotting . Geometric . And enthrallingly minimum .

This week ’s picture was get hold of from a paseo underneath an arched , causeway bridge on the Indian River Lagoon . Even though the bridge is mostly over H2O , I did n’t strain to admit any in the picture because I thought the cast of the concrete supports was the most crucial thing and it did n’t ask any context beyond that . Fujifilm s100fs — f7.1 — 1/160″ — ISO 100 — 103 millimeter . [ Ed note : scroll down for the full snapshot ]

Concrete Sentinels
When the contest was announced , i was right away reminded of “ Concrete Sentinels ” of a local parking service department … friend have kick that once one fancy the theanthropism of the centre / nozzle that they ca n’t see the formed concrete as anything but silent watchers . Canon EOS 5D Mark III/ 50MM , f3.2 , 1/50 , ISO 100

Turrets
During a amble through town ( Basel , Switzerland ) last Friday I remember the Concrete Gizmodo Shooting Challenge and make up one’s mind to have a go . Passing by this concrete school ( ! ) building I thought its forbidding façade kind of reflect the frozen wintertime clime that surrounded me . Left the tree at the far conclusion on role , to leave alone some life in the picture . Glad my frozen fingers negociate to press the shutter button …

Daytime Nap
This shot was take at a Buddhist necropolis in a township outside Kyoto , Japan . This sleeping Buddha , a large ( 20 foot extensive ) concrete statue at the graveyard ’s entrance , cast visitors at relaxation as its tranquility balances out the sombreness of last . I specially wish how the clouds on the leftfield resemble a pillow . No colour chastisement was done at all , but photoshop was used a bit to remove a duo of tree branches that encroached on the clear sky . Panasonic GH1 , Lumix G Vario 14 - 45 mm , @18 mm , f/8 , ISO 100 , 1/500s .

The Crew Bolted
Not too far from my sign is a development that has been unfinished for years . I headed there to take pictures of the foundations of the house . Martian Plateau
Here is my last minute entry for the concrete photo competition . This was taken with my Sony A77 and the 16 - 50 millimeter lens zoomed all the out to 50mm , ISO 400 with the aperture at f5.6 and a 1/125th shutter speed . I knew the second I saw that contest that I wanted to photograph the really coolheaded concrete holding the wasteweir together at Lake Indigo ( http://goo.gl/maps/fEive ) in my neighborhood . This was taken about as close as I could get , and then I heighten the clearness , acuity , vibrance and saturation , to get a stab that to me attend like a false color shot NASA would have taken of a tableland on Mars .

High Beams
This is the bottom of a bridge deck near my domicile . I take twenty or so shots over half an hour depend for the right slant . There were some mossy pics , some with the brook below , but something about this one just screamed CONCRETE for me , so I fail with it . Sony SLT - A65V , Tamron 17 - 50 mm , ISO 100 , f/32 , 3 bracketed exposures

Psychedelic
So I take a similar shot to this in high shoal when I was study and developing 35 millimetre black and bloodless picture taking for a labor on “ bloodline ” and will never forget how excited the instructor was to see my finished product . When I project the Concrete Jungle topic my first thinking was to go reshoot this now yr later and see what I could total up with . I did n’t get there until sundown and could n’t find any Inner Light under the bridge so I had to overexpose and underexpose by two stops ( along with a normal exporsure ) to fulfil in the background and the concrete . forecast since I was going to have to unify them I ’d go with a funky edit that blew out the background and this was the result . Shot on a Canon XTI ( 400D ) with the kit 18 - 55 mm lens , ISO 400 @ f/5.6 over and under unwrap by two stops , merged in Photoshop with a NIK plugin .

This hebdomad ’s ikon was taken from a walkway underneath an arched , causeway bridge circuit on the Indian River Lagoon . Even though the bridge is mostly over water , I did n’t seek to include any in the moving picture because I retrieve the form of the concrete reinforcement was the most important thing and it did n’t need any setting beyond that .
